Usually, the built-in Windows Update service should update all device drivers and systems, so you never have to touch them. However, sometimes you may need to update them manually if the device stops working after a system update, or if Windows doesn’t recognize a particular component.

In this handy guide, we’ll walk you through driver updates using the handy Windows Update feature to make sure your system continues to run smoothly.
Short version
Open the settings menu
Click the Update & Security button
Click Windows Update
Click the “Check for Updates” button.
Click View More Updates
Click the “Update Driver” button
Select a driver to update
Click “Download and Install”
Step 1. Open the Settings menu
The first port of call to access the driver update location is to open the settings menu. To do this, either look for the gear icon or go to the search bar and type “Settings”.
Step 2: Click the Update & Security button
Once you get to the settings menu, you will see a lot of different submenus. To update drivers, we need to go to Update & Security, which is usually the last one on the list.
Step 3: Click Windows Update
To the side of the Update & Security menu, you’ll see a list of features – the top one should be labeled Windows Update, otherwise the Settings menu should load directly into the Windows Update menu, saving a step. You can see what live view looks like in the screenshot below.
Step 4: Click the Check for updates button
Once inside, you can check if there are new drivers or system updates that Windows can update itself. The main button in the Windows Update menu is the big “Check for Updates” button, to start searching for new drivers, click the button.

Step 5: Select View optional updates.
To check if there are additional driver updates available, you can click on the “View additional updates” hyperlink, which is located under the “Check for Updates” button.
Step 6: Click the Update Drivers button
To specifically look for a driver update under the Optional Updates tab, expand the drop-down menu labeled as follows.
Step 7: Select a driver to update
To install driver updates, select the ones you want to install by checking the box.
Step 8: Click Download and Install
After you select them, you just need to click on the “Download and Install” button. After that, a driver update should be downloaded, and you may have to restart your computer for these changes to take effect.
