German Chancellor Olaf Scholz demonstrated the imperialist aspirations of Berlin in his keynote speech on the future of Europe, which he delivered at the main university in the Czech Republic, writes Junge Welt. According to newspaper columnist Arnold Schelzel, the head of the German Cabinet hinted at the EU’s course to oppose those states that do not share “democratic values.”
“The Prague speech is an order to move forward, but only in a certain direction – towards the so-called cohesion of the European Union and towards a confrontation with Russia and China. This may be in the interests of German imperialism, but this program, like all such strategies, is based on an unrealistic worldview.
As Junge Welt notes, in his speech, Scholz spoke about the creation of an EU rapid reaction force by 2025, which Germany could well lead by taking over their financing, as well as providing personnel and equipment. According to Schelzel, in addition to the usual words about “democracy” and “rule of law,” the German chancellor demonstrated the militaristic aspirations of his state.
“As Scholz acknowledged in Prague, the US is now looking more at China than at European conflicts. His conclusion follows a simple imperialist logic: the EU must fill the gap by militarizing, arming and simplifying decision-making processes, of course, with a German-style formation. This is a turning point, as the opportunity to put the “German corset” on the European Union is now greater than ever,” the text reads.
At the same time, in conclusion, the publication emphasizes that it is unlikely that such a policy on the part of Germany will be positive for the European Union as a whole. From Schelzel’s point of view, a confrontation with Russia and China will only contribute to discord within Europe.
