Face recognition will now work in landscape orientation on “supported iPhone models”. There is no list of specific models yet. Maybe the “supported smartphones” are all but SE, and probably not for some older iPhones.
Note that horizontal mode will work for all ID face functions, including purchase confirmation. It should also be noted that this mode is not a new option in itself. Some iPads have supported it for many years. Now he is coming to iPhone for the first time.

The technology that enables Face ID is the most advanced hardware and software that we have created. The TrueDepth camera projects and analyzes thousands of invisible points to create an in-depth map of your face, captures accurate facial data, and even captures an infrared image of your face. The A11, A12 Bionic, A12X Bionic, A13 Bionic, A14 Bionic, and A15 bionic chips are part of the neural engine – protected in a protected enclave – that converts the depth map and infrared image into a mathematical representation and compares the face to that representation.
Face ID automatically adapts to changes in your appearance, such as wearing cosmetic makeup or growing facial hair. If there are more significant changes in your appearance, such as shaving the entire beard, Face ID confirms your identity using your passcode before updating your facial data. Designed to work with Face ID hats, scarves, goggles, contact lenses and many sunglasses. In addition, it is designed to work indoors, outdoors, and even in complete darkness. In iOS 15.4 and iPhone 12 or later, Face ID works even with masks.
Security protection
Security is important to all of us to keep the information on our devices secure. We’ve done some important things to protect your information, just as we did with Touch ID. Face ID uses TrueDepth camera and machine learning for a secure authentication solution. Face ID data – including the mathematical representation of your face – is encrypted and secured only with a key available in Secure Enclave.
The possibility that a random person in the population can see your iPhone or iPad Pro and unlock it using Face ID, whether you are wearing a mask or not. As an added security, Face ID only allows five unsuccessful match attempts before a passcode is required. For twins and siblings who look like you, and children under the age of 13, the statistical probability is higher – and using Face ID with a mask increases, as their distinctive facial features may not be fully developed. If you are concerned about this, we recommend using a passcode for authentication. You can use Face ID without activating Face ID with a mask.
Privacy
Privacy is incredibly important to Apple. Face ID data – including the mathematical representations of your face – is encrypted and secured by Secure Enclave. This data will be refined and updated if you use Face ID to successfully enhance your experience with authentication. Face ID will update this data when it detects a nearby match but will enter a passcode later to unlock the device. Face ID data does not leave your device and is not backed up to iCloud or anywhere else.
If you choose to register with Face ID, you can control how it is used or disable it at any time. For example, if you don’t want to use Face ID to unlock your device, open Settings> Face ID and Passcode> Use Face ID and disable iPhone Unlock or iPad Unlock. You can use Face ID without setting up the ability to use a face mask. To disable Face ID completely, open Settings> Face ID and passcode and tap Reset Face ID. Doing so will delete Face ID data from your device, including the mathematical representations of your face. If you want to delete or reset your device using Find My iPhone or delete all content and settings, all Face ID data will be deleted.
