“The United States and the United Kingdom are strong allies and longtime friends, and that will never change,” the head of state said in a statement posted on the White House website.

Biden thanked Truss for her partnership on a range of issues, including “holding Russia accountable” for its actions against Ukraine.

“We will continue to work closely with the Government of the United Kingdom as we work together to address the global challenges facing our nations,” the US President added.

Earlier in the day, Truss announced her resignation. She specified that she would remain as head of the cabinet until her successor was elected. Truss served as prime minister for only 44 days.

Among the possible successors of Truss, The Times named her predecessor Boris Johnson, former Treasury Secretary Rishi Sunak and House of Commons leader Penny Mordaunt. The Sky News TV channel, in turn, considered the ex-Minister of Internal Affairs Suella Braverman and Foreign Trade Minister Kemi Badenok, who resigned the day before, as likely candidates.
