Creation of a unified platform for cancer screening and treatment was discussed in St. Petersburg

The creation of a unified platform for cancer screening and treatment will be discussed at the scientific and practical conference on theranostics in St. Petersburg. On Friday, September 16, REN TV correspondent Roman Ishmukhametov reports.
“Smart medicine”: Russian scientists have developed a new drug against cancer
It will destroy only affected cells without destroying healthy ones.

Vice-Governor of St. Petersburg Oleg Ergashev spoke at the opening of the conference. He noted that the last decade was marked by significant progress in the diagnosis and treatment of malignant tumors, but in Russia there is still no single approach to modern diagnostic screening.

“Today, doctors and scientists at the conference are talking about how this can be changed. So, in Russia they decided to create a single platform that will allow them to start treatment immediately when they notice the disease, ”Ishmukhametov reports.

Doctors also discuss the most advanced methods and technologies in the fight against cancer, a disease that ranks second in terms of mortality worldwide.

In particular, Professor of the First Moscow State Medical University named after I.M. Sechenov, Doctor of Biology Anton Buzdin spoke about such an achievement of modern medicine as theranostics. According to him, this is a new milestone in the fight against cancer, when both diagnostics and treatment are carried out with the help of special preparations.

“The concept says that the drug itself should look for the problematic organ – in our case, the tumor – and kill it. And if at the beginning it was perceived as science fiction, then with the advent, first of all, targeted therapy, it became a reality, ”said Buzdin.

He added that radiopharmaceuticals accumulate in tumor cells and, like a powerful searchlight, can illuminate the affected organ on the screen of a diagnostic device. When the dose is increased, they will destroy cancer cells without harming healthy ones, unlike chemotherapy.

Maria Vorontsova, a leading researcher at the National Research Center for Endocrinology of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, Candidate of Medical Sciences, also spoke at the conference.

“It is our growing understanding of what a cell looks like at the molecular level that will allow us to more accurately and more effectively apply theranostics tools and achieve a cure for patients,” she said.

In addition, a Russian analogue of a contrast agent was recently created and registered at the beginning of the year, which is necessary for all surgeons.

“This is a bioequivalent, it even turned out to be cleaner, that is, safer than a foreign drug,” commented the chief oncologist-radiologist of the My Medical Center Group of Companies, Doctor of Medical Sciences Pavel Rumyantsev.

In addition, as doctors note, thanks to the development of medicine, in some cases it is possible to defeat cancer even at the last stage.

The country’s first scientific conference on theranostics “Multidisciplinary personalized medicine. Theranostics is an integration platform for the development of oncology” takes place in St. Petersburg on September 16 and 17. It gathered more than six hundred scientists and doctors. The event was organized by the My Medical Center Group of Companies (formerly SOGAZ MEDICINE Group of Companies). It is planned that meetings of the best doctors and scientists in theranostics in St. Petersburg will become annual.

Earlier, at the end of July, it was reported that Russian scientists are working on the creation of a domestic platform technology for combined radiotherapy of oncological diseases. The development is carried out at the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University together with the Russian Scientific Center for Radiology and Surgical Technologies named after Academician A.M. Granova.
