Former Brazil No. 1 weighs Liverpool and Man City stoppers – Alisson or Ederson?

Liverpool’s Alisson and Manchester City’s Ederson are international team-mates for Brazil and are widely regarded as two of the best goalkeepers of their generation

Former Brazil goalkeeper Julio Cesar has refused to pick a favorite between Liverpool’s Alisson and Manchester City’s Ederson.

Brazilian stoppers are widely regarded as two of the best goalkeepers in the world right now. The two are vying to become their country’s number 1 at this year’s World Cup in Qatar, with coach Tite often picking Alisson over his Premier League rivals.

The Liverpool ace was Brazil’s No. 1 when they won the 2019 Copa America – and won the competition’s Golden Glove – and was named the best goalkeeper in the world by FIFA in 2019. He also won the 2018-19 Premier League Golden Glove.

In terms of trophies, Alisson has won every competition he has entered at Liverpool. He has won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, EFL Cup, Club World Cup and UEFA Super Cup in his four-year tenure – and could win more trophies.

Liverpool have reached this season’s Champions League final and will face Real Madrid on May 28 in Paris. They are also still in the hunt for the Premier League title and are four points behind leaders City with a game in hand.

The goal to stop Alisson is Ederson. The two-time Premier League Golden Glove winner hasn’t won everything in England – nor can he boast the same individual honors – but he is on track to win a fourth league title in five years at City this season. Guardiola’s trusted stopper has also won four EFL Cups, two Community Shields and the FA Cup.

In truth, it’s often difficult to choose between Ederson and Alisson – both have kept 20 clean sheets in the league this season – and Cesar struggled on that occasion. “Great question, I’ll stay calm!” replied the ex-goalkeeper when asked by GOAL about his choice.

One of the greatest Brazilian stoppers of his generation, Cesar won 87 caps between 2004 and 2014. The former Inter Milan star, who has a place in the club’s Hall of Fame, was named European Goalkeeper of the Year in 2009/10.

Cesar won 30 trophies during his incredible career – including five Serie A titles, three Portuguese titles, three Italian Cups, two Confederations Cups, the Champions League, Club World Cup, Copa America and the Portuguese Cup.

On the Brazilian goalkeeper’s current high level, Cesar added: “In recent years, after Dida and I, people in European football have started to see our position in Brazil as an important position.

“When I arrived in Italy, in 1982, Waldir Perez was being talked about [a goalkeeper who made high profile mistakes in a World Cup]. They said I was an example of goalkeepers getting better in Brazil. I thought: ‘No, Brazil have always had great goalkeepers.’ Now you’ve just started to respect our position.

“Now if we talk about the top three goalkeepers in the world, we could talk about Ederson and Alisson. It’s not just those two, there are many others in Europe. Most people respect Brazilian goalkeepers in football now…if .” If you’re talking about goalkeepers for the World Cup, Tite doesn’t have to worry about either of them.”
