ISW: Russians are concentrating forces on the Luhansk region from several directions

The Russians are sending a large number of their troops, artillery and aircraft to fight in the Luhansk region.

Details: It is noted that the Russians are pulling the necessary resources from Izyum, Kharkov, Donetsk and Zaporozhye.

Russian forces are likely trying to simultaneously encircle several small cells of Ukrainian forces in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions: the wider area of Severodonetsk (including Rubizhne and Lysichansk), Bakhmut-Lysichansk, around Zolote (northeast of Popasna) and Avdiivka.

Russian troops advanced more last week than during the rest of May, but those advances remain slow, limited to smaller targets than the Kremlin anticipated, and clash with Ukrainian defenses.

ISW notes that these achievements of the Russians are not a big breakthrough.

In addition, Russian troops are likely to face protracted urban fighting if they encircle Severodonetsk (as well as other major cities such as Bakhmut).
