Manchester United have reportedly suffered a setback to their hopes of signing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong this summer.

The Red Devils are set to begin a major squad makeover when new manager Erik ten Hag arrives at the club. Midfield is seen as a priority area for improvement but it seems their top target De Jong would rather stay at Barcelona.

It comes as Ruben Neves dropped a hint that he could leave Wolves this summer as he broke down in tears after their final home game of the season. And United have reportedly started working on a deal to bring Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips to Old Trafford.

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong has reportedly told Barcelona he would like to stay at the Camp Nou this summer after being linked with a move to Manchester United.

New United boss Erik ten Hag worked with De Jong at Ajax and is said to have been keen on a reunion with his former midfielder. But the Red Devils may have to move on to other goals now as reports suggest De Jong wants to stay at the Catalan club.

Barcelona manager Xavi is said to be keen on keeping the midfielder – with United’s only hope now appearing to be if the Blaugrana board decide to monetize the Dutch international.

Ruben Neve’s clue discovered

Ruben Neves has given his clearest sign yet that he could leave Wolves this summer after breaking down in tears after the club’s last home game.

Fans serenaded the midfielder with “Don’t sell Neves” chants after reports linking him to a summer move to Manchester United during Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Norwich. As the players took part in a lap of honor to thank the fans for their support this season, Neves was seen tearfully waving to the fans.

United have been linked with a move for the Portugal international to solve his mid-park problems and Neves’ actions could be a sign he could leave Wolves when the transfer window opens.

Work begins on deal with Kalvin Phillips

Manchester United have reportedly started work on a deal to secure the summer transfer of Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

Phillips, 26, is reportedly preparing to change agents in hopes of landing a move in the summer and could secure a highly controversial transfer by joining United. The England player grew up as a Leeds fan and his entire family are said to be huge supporters of the club.

But that may not stop him from securing a summer move as Leeds are now favorites to be relegated from the Premier League and the club sit 18th in the table.
