Michael Carrick was reportedly being considered for the Lincoln City manager position before the League One club announced their new boss on Thursday afternoon
Lincoln City have named former Premier League winger Mark Kennedy as their new manager after he reportedly overlooked Michael Carrick for the role.
The League One team have been on the hunt for their next boss after Michael Appleton resigned from his position earlier this month. Lincoln, who lost 2-1 to Blackpool in the League One play-off final at Wembley last season, finished 17th in the standings this season.
Carrick was part of the coaching staff of Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United before leaving the club when Ralf Rangnick became interim boss in December. The 40-year-old was interim manager of the Red Devils for three games prior to the German’s arrival, winning two and drawing one.

According to the Daily Mail, Carrick was being considered for the vacant position at Lincoln. He is believed to have been interested but the EFL outfit appointed Kennedy instead. The 45-year-old gave up his role as Birmingham City’s deputy boss to take the job.
Kennedy, who has 34 caps for the Republic of Ireland, has represented Liverpool, Wimbledon, Manchester City and Wolves in the Premier League. During his 20-year professional career, he made more than 500 professional appearances.
“Throughout the many hours of interviewing, we have been very impressed with Mark’s knowledge, energy, drive and passion,” said Lincoln Chairman Clive Nates. “We know he is a highly respected coach and in the interview process he has impressed us with his desire to improve and develop players while also developing an aggressive, offensive style of play which we believe he is in League One will be successful and delight our fans.”

Carrick is still looking for his next role in football after leaving United. Speaking to The Independent in October 2018, he revealed his ambition to become a manager. “I’m not cold when I think about becoming a coach, you know,” said the ex-midfielder.
“I’m starting now, really on the bottom rung of the ladder, although manager Jose has given me an incredible opportunity to be at United now. But I think it’s step by step, I don’t get carried away. But of course, it’s like when you wanted to be a footballer.
“You wanted to be a footballer when you were young and you think I would like to do that. There’s a lot of things along the way that could change that and now it’s the same when you’re a manager, time will tell.”

One of the most decorated footballers of his generation, Carrick has won 17 trophies at United – including five Premier League titles, two League Cups, the Champions League, Europa League, FA Cup and Club World Cup. He won 34 senior caps for England.
After his three games in charge of United, Carrick said: “It certainly didn’t put me off, but at the same time I’m not desperate to be a manager. i am realistic The experience definitely helped me out of the lows and the sadness, the first feelings that Ole had to go, adjust and get through the games.
“It was a challenge, but one I enjoyed. You’re never sure until you’re cast in a certain role, what you’re good at or not good at. This is life experience. You have to go through it to learn from it. I certainly learned a lot this week.”
