More than 1.5 million refugees from Donbass and Ukraine arrived in Russia

About 20,000 refugees from Donbass and Ukraine have crossed the Russian border in the last 24 hours. The total number of refugees who have arrived in the country has exceeded 1.5 million, an emergency services official said on May 27.

“During the day, 19,553 refugees from Donbass and Ukraine crossed the Russian border, of which 2,140 were children. In total, 1,502,000 people crossed the border of the Russian Federation, among them more than 247 thousand children, ”RIA Novosti quotes him.

As Olga Makeyeva, Ambassador of the Donetsk People’s Republic to the Russian Federation, said on May 20, more than 1 million refugees from Donbass are currently located in more than 50 regions of Russia.

On March 11, Russian President Vladimir Putin thanked the Russians for supporting refugees from Donbass. According to him, the fact that Russian citizens are so responsive to the need to help people who are in trouble shows that, in general, people support the actions of the Russian army, and Russia is doing the right thing by supporting Donbass.

On February 24, Russia announced the start of a special operation to protect Donbass. The operation began against the backdrop of the situation in the Donbass that worsened in mid-February. The authorities of the DPR and LPR reported increased shelling by Ukrainian troops, announced the evacuation of civilians in the Russian Federation and asked for recognition of independence. On February 21, Putin signed a corresponding decree.
