RTÉ takes on the Pantos with the launch of Toy Show The Musical

RTÉ is launching a Christmas musical themed around traditional pantos, based on a little girl’s Late Late Toy Show adventure, which will begin this December.

Toy Show The Musical will be held this Christmas in the Auditorium of the Convention Center and will “bring the magic of The Late Late Toy Show for the first time on the theater stage”.

The production follows the story of a girl and her family as they prepare for the biggest night of their lives – the night of toy fair through the eyes of a little girl.

The new Irish musical is created and produced by Late Late Show Producers Jane Murphy and Katherine Drohan and begins December 10th during the Christmas panto season. RTÉ confirmed the show will run for “several weeks”.

The broadcaster said so Independent.ie The production would “require investment” to “put on a fantastic show for families”. This is likely funded in part by the television license fee.

Any profit from the production will be used to “maintain the delivery of RTÉ’s public services,” said a spokesman for RTÉ.

RTÉ director general Dee Forbes said the channel has been “quietly working on it Toy Show The Musical for quite a while” and are “delighted to be able to launch it”.

“We said a few years ago that live events would be an important part of RTÉ’s future, but we had to postpone our plans due to the pandemic. As well as The Late Late Toy Show myself, so much care and thought goes into this musical,” said Ms. Forbes.

Toy Show The Musical is directed by Séimí Campbell, whose recent work includes Gary Barlow Another phase and Jason Robert Browns Songs for a new world at the London Palladium. Award-winning playwright Lisa Tierney-Keogh said she was “absolutely thrilled to be writing Toy Show The Musical“.

The musical brings the experience of The Late Late Toy Show on the theater stage for the first time and tells a story about “Family, tradition and how the magic of toy fair brings the whole world together for one truly amazing night every year”.

The production was described as “a mischievous, musical experience for the whole family, where the kids call the shots and the adults get to be kids again.”

Producers Murphy and Drohan said they were thrilled “to do the honors toy fair and all the joy and magic it inspires across Ireland each year” with a musical.

“Full of fun, laughter and love, let’s see how it’s done toy fair allows children to teach us that the magic they need to change their world already exists within them.”

Late Late Host Ryan Tubridy confirmed he will not be part of the show, saying he will “leave the theater stage to the theater actors” and wished the “brilliant team involved” well.

Director Séimí Campbell, who lives in London, said it was “an honor to return home to direct a new, original musical that builds on the incredible tradition of the toy fair; the magic of childhood, the resilience of family and the power and meaning of play”.
