Shadayev confirmed the postponement of the issuance of digital passports

The project of issuing digital passports is frozen. This was announced on Friday, June 17, by the head of the Ministry of Digital Development Maksut Shadayev on the sidelines of the SPIEF.

“We have postponed this issue (issuing digital passports – Ed.) for the time being due to the fact that now there are more serious pressing problems,” he told RIA Novosti.

Earlier, on June 11, Forbes magazine, citing sources, stated that the Russian Ministry of Digital Development froze the project for issuing digital passports for an indefinite period against the backdrop of a Russian special operation to protect Donbass “for financial reasons.”

On January 2, the Ministry of Internal Affairs reported that a paper passport would be canceled when an electronic document is issued.

At the same time, a public opinion poll showed the attitude of Russians to the transition to electronic passports. As follows from a study by the SuperJob service, Russians reacted negatively to the transition to electronic passports without preserving their paper counterparts.

A digital passport is an analogue of an electronic bank card with a contactless chip. It will contain the personal data of the person, his photograph. In addition, if desired, such data as TIN, SNILS or driver’s license number can be entered into the memory of a smart card.
