The expert assessed the results of the Cannes Film Festival

The film “The Triangle of Sorrow” by the Swedish director Ruben Ostlund was hardly named among the main contenders for the “Palme d’Or”, an unofficial victory for the South Korean drama Pak Chan-wook’s “Decision to leave”, according to Izvestia columnist candidate of philological sciences Sergey Sychev.
We do not need the French coast: what will happen in Cannes, in addition to the lack of press from the Russian Federation
And who will still make his way to the Croisette

As noted by the reviewer, in Screen magazine’s rankings, “The Triangle of Sorrow” has an average score and review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes also gives it a modest 71%.

In addition, the expert added, critics believed more in the victory of the film “The decision to leave.” He has the highest score on Screen and 92% on Tomatoes, he noted.

According to Sychev, “Perhaps, we can say that the unofficial winner of the Cannes was still a Korean.”

“Nevertheless, the position of the jury turned out to be very balanced, geographically heterogeneous: Europe and Asia received approximately the same number of awards. But in the end, Europe won, which is far from being in the trend of both world cinema, which is intensely looking for and discovering new territories, and the film criticism community, ”the candidate of philological sciences commented on the results.

He also recalled that this year Cannes was criticized for its conservative program, in which the volume of the director’s name did not always match the quality of the work. The results of this festival will remain in history as conformist, the expert concluded.

The fact that the film by the Swede Ruben Östlund “Triangle of Sorrow” took the main prize of the Cannes Film Festival became known earlier on Saturday. This is the director’s second Palme d’Or. In 2017, he won a prize for the painting “Square”.

Cannes veteran South Korean Pak Chan-wook won Best Director for his work on Decision to Leave.

The prize for best actress went to Iranian Zara Amir Ebrahimi from the film “Holy Spider” directed by Ali Abbasi. The best actor, according to the jury of the festival, is South Korean actor Song Kang-ho for his role in Hirokazu Kore-eda’s The Broker.

This year only one Russian film was presented at the Cannes Film Festival – Tchaikovsky’s Wife by Kirill Serebrennikov. Russian film director Alexander Sokurov refused to present his film “Fairy Tale” at the Cannes Film Festival, despite the personal invitation of the organizers. As the director clarified, “Fairy Tale” is too serious and deep for the program of the event.

Earlier in their statement, Cannes said they would not accept the Russian delegation and anyone associated with the Russian government. In addition, the Russian media did not receive accreditation for the festival.

At the same time, on May 24, Ukrainian director Serhiy Loznitsa, who is taking part in the 75th Cannes Film Festival, spoke out against the boycott of Russians. According to him, such an attitude is inhumane.
