GAME NIGHT: Colorado Rockies vs New York Mets

When: 8:40 PM ET, Friday, May 20, 2022
Where: Coors Field, Denver, Colorado

Summary

The New York Mets have suffered some significant injuries in their rotations this season but have managed to stay on top of the National League East.

The latest disaster news is that Max Scherzer will miss six to eight weeks with a moderate to severe oblique strain at his start on Wednesday. He joins fellow Tsai Young Award winner Jacob Degram as well as Tyler Miguel on the shelf.

Despite the injury, New York has found a way to win and will try to continue the winning streak when it opens a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies on Friday night in Denver.

The Rockies were off Thursday when the Mets won a dramatic 7-6, 10-inning victory over Pete Alonso’s two-run, 447-foot homer against the St. Louis Cardinals. The New York Cardinals took three of the four games.

Colorado lost two of their last three matches against visiting San Francisco Giants earlier in the week, winning 5-3 in Wednesday’s final.

The Mets will send right-hander Carlos Carasco (3-1, 3.73 ERA) to the mound on Friday, where the Rockies will clash with German Marquez (1-3, 6.16) on the right.

Carrasco has never faced the Rockies while Marquez is 3-1 with a 3.48 ERA in five careers against New York.

Although the teams will play three matches, the weather could be a major reason for the Mets’ scheduled tour of Denver alone. After winter temperatures reached 80s on Thursday, a winter storm is forecast in Colorado early Friday. Some models are forecasting 5-8 inches of snow until Friday night.

Conditions are expected to be bad on Saturday, with rain in the morning and highs in the 30s.

The New York roster did not announce the move to fill Sherger’s place, but David Peterson traveled to Denver with the team and is likely a starter for Saturday. Peterson was selected in Syracuse at Triple in late April and returned briefly to the Majors for a spot start during the May 3 doubleheader.

According to manager Buck Schwalter, he prefers to fill holes in the rotation from the inside.

“The perfect world is that you become self-sufficient with your own people,” Schulter said. “Someone has another chance to get ahead. And I think it builds good morale in the organization when Tyler Miguel and Peterson … think we’re going to look inside first before we start luring someone else’s players. The answer is here.”

The Rockies, after a good start to the season, lost seven of eight games before Wednesday’s win to end a 12-game skid against the Giants.

Colorado has been known for its crime for years, but its defense has been great ever since. The Rockies were consistently Gold Glove winners, but the defense was lacking in 2022.

Colorado ranks 26th among majors in 979 fielding percentages and has made 29 errors, more than any other team except three. The Rockies had three errors in their first two games against San Francisco but none of them won the series final on Wednesday afternoon.

“I like the fact that we played a good, clean game,” said Colorado manager Bud Black. “When we play a clean game, we win. Looking back at our victory, that’s usually how it’s drawn.”
