When to go to bed to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease

Diseases of the cardiovascular system are diseases of the heart muscle and the circulatory system, which is the main cause of mortality around the world. In Ukraine, according to the statistics of doctors of Zaporizhzhya regional clinical hospital, the share of cardiovascular disease is 63.3% in the structure of mortality. For comparison, the proportion of cancer – 13.4%.

This is stated in a study published in European Heart Journal – Digital Health. More than 88,000 participants were analyzed, the average age of 61 years. Most of them are women.

Researchers have collected data on sleep and awakening with a wrist accelerometer.

The data indicate that falling asleep from 22 to 23 hours can reduce the risk of heart disease compared to sleeping earlier or later.

Researchers also found that those people who went to sleep at midnight or later, more likely to get a heart attack, heart failure, chronic coronary heart disease, stroke. They were the risk of cardiovascular disease by 25 percent higher.

However, research cannot prove that early or late sleep contributes to the development of cardiovascular disease as they can be caused by other factors.

The research data were adjusted to the age, gender, duration and irregularity of sleep, as well as other lifestyle and health skills.

The author of the study Dr. David Plens said: “Although we cannot conclude about the cause and effect of our study, the results show that early or late sleeping time can be more likely to disturb the biological clock with adverse effects on health cardiovascular system ”.

The doctor added that one of the possible causes of increased risk of a fatal disease associated with a later falling asleep may be associated with a lower probability of seeing the morning light that helps to lose the biological clock.

He added: “Although the results do not show cause and effect, sleep time has become a potential factor in cardiac risk-regardless of other risk factors and sleep characteristics. If our findings are confirmed in other studies, sleep time and basic sleep hygiene can be a goal of public health care to reduce the risk of heart disease. ”
