Film Review
After a rather disappointing second installment in 2018, the third and final installment of the Jurassic World franchise marks the return of director Colin Trevor, which is considered the final film in this current trilogy. Original Jurassic Park cast members (Steven Spielberg, 1993) provided Laura Darn, Sam Neal and Jeff Goldblum nostalgia, and Jurassic World: Dominion, opened in Los Angeles earlier this week.
Four years after the destruction of Isla Nubla in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, dinosaurs now live in semi-harmony with humans. With the advent of the prehistoric animal black market, governments around the world have decided to hand over intelligent corporate clothing Biosin and its boss (a rather brilliant performance by Campbell Scott) with control of many free-roaming species.
Things get even more complicated when a group of tenants captures teenage clone Messi Lockwood (Isabella Sermon), whose DNA could be the key to a disgusting new Biosin initiative. It persuaded former Jurassic World employees Wayne (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) to look for their young responsibilities. Meanwhile, Dr. Eli Sadler (Darn), Professor Ian Malcolm (Goldblum), and archaeologist Alan Grant (Neil) have teamed up to investigate a large swarm of locusts that may have been involved in biosine.
Hoping to finish the trilogy, Trevor and co-authors Emily Carmichael and Derek Conley have decided to give up everything except the kitchen sink in this third and final film. Unfortunately for those involved, none of this really works and in the end we have a deep dark, long and unpleasantly themed story that is not a patch from the first movie.
In addition to being too long and incongruous, Dominion can be very annoying. True, the reunion of Darn, Neil and Goldblam is a shock to this ailing franchise, but nothing, not even Goldblam’s infamous champing style, could save it from being one of the worst movies in the series.
Dominion’s saving compassion often comes in the form of an unrivaled performance courtesy of rising star Mamudu Athi, recently seen in the excellent Netflix series Archive 81, playing right-handed man Ramsay Cole in Biosin’s shadowy boss Lewis Dodson. Elsewhere, Dwanda Wise Chartered cargo plane pilot Kayla Watts in action and Hassan, while key cast member BD Wang appears as remorseful biologist Dr. Henry Wu.
