Sobyanin announced the production of modern cars at the Moskvich plant

The former Renault plant will not produce old Moskvich cars. As Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said on Thursday, May 26, the capital’s enterprise will focus on the production of the most modern cars, including electric cars.

“We were very afraid of losing the plant, one of the best in the country, and, unfortunately, this happened, Renault said goodbye to us. But we still decided to try to leave this competence, we remembered Moskvich, ”the mayor noted at the superfinal of the Leaders of Russia competition for managers.

The mayor of the city emphasized that it is impossible to create a domestic car from scratch exclusively by Russian forces, therefore, international partners will be involved in production.

Earlier, on May 19, it was reported that the Moscow authorities, the Ministry of Industry and Trade and KamAZ were negotiating with automakers from China on the production of cars at a car factory in the capital that had been vacated after Renault left. Discussions are ongoing with JAC Motors, FAW and BYD, among others, two sources said.

On May 18, Russian Transport Minister Vitaly Savelyev announced that the restarted Moskvich car would run on an electric motor.

On May 16, Sobyanin announced that the Moscow Renault plant was transferred to the balance of the city, it will produce cars under the historical Moskvich brand. The launch of production at the Moscow plant is expected in 2022, the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation noted.

Automobile production “Moskvich” existed from 1930 to 2010. In 2010, OAO Moskvich was liquidated due to bankruptcy.
