The long-awaited innovation has appeared in watchOS 9

According to sources, starting with watchOS 9, Apple Watch owners will be able to make calls directly from their watches. This could have been done earlier, but only in FaceTime – for other programs and messengers, this feature was turned off.

Apple is now launching Kolkata for developers – this tool lets you directly apply the ability to start, end or reject VoIP calls to their compatible Apple Watch. The company says any service will be able to implement call support and cites Webwex as an example.

The most notable improvement that comes with watchOS 9 is a new AFib History feature, which allows users to track AFib’s frequency over an extended period of time. It helps them to manage the factors of their life that can affect their condition. Since 2018, the Apple Watch has been able to monitor the user’s heart rhythm to detect symptoms of atrial fibrillation (AFIB). If left untreated, AFib is a leading condition that can lead to stroke. JDNet’s Jason Parlow documents how capability saved his life.

It seems we can expect that teams of popular programs like Skype, WhatsApp and Telegram will quickly “tighten” and implement Kolkata in their software. Apple Watch owners will then be able to make calls directly from the watch through these services.
