Summary

After beating the Seattle Mariners with a season-high 12-run, 16-hit performance on Thursday, the Boston Red Sox are looking to build on that win as the four-game series continues on Friday.

Michael Wacha (3-0, 1.38 ERA) is expected to come off the injured list to start for Boston.

The Red Sox haven’t listed a starter for Friday before Thursday’s game, but manager Alex Cora said Wacha is expected to return after missing for two weeks due to a left intercostal burn.

“Because of the history of the diagonal and all that, we just make sure we have the MRI and all that stuff and everything is fine,” said Cora, who originally hoped Wacha would be able to start last weekend in Texas. The right-hander threw a simulated innings at Fenway Park on Monday.

Wacha has not pitched for the Red Sox since May 3, when he emptied Los Angeles Angeles in 5 2/3 innings of a three-hit ball. With a 9.57 ERA in the three starts of his career against the Mariners, he allowed 0-3, 30 hits and 16 runs in 16 innings.

Although the stars of the series opener were many, Trevor Story led the way, going 3-for-4 with three home runs, seven RBIs and five runs in Boston’s 12-6 win.

“It’s special. There’s a lot of praise for (you) tonight knowing how tough the game is,” Story told NESN in a post-game interview. “On a night like that you forget all the hard times. … I was watching the ball well and trying to hit the line drives, not trying to do too much.”

JD Martinez (-5, 3 for 4) and Alex Verdugo (3-for-5, 4 for) and the Red Sox enjoyed huge games, who will shoot for their first three-game winning streak on Friday. .

The Red Sox “did a lot of good things,” Cora said of his club, clearing the initial 4-0 deficit to win the biggest comeback of the season.

“It shows the strength of our team,” the story says. “If we get down early, we won’t be out of it.”

Seattle will try to bounce back on Friday behind Ravi Ray (4-3, 4.62 ERA), who has logged 19 strikeouts in 11 2/3 innings in his last two starts. Despite allowing seven runs in two games, Roy won consecutively against the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets.

In New York on Sunday, Roy dropped five hits in six innings and five runs on three walks. However, he made a career-high 27 swings and missed a total of 97 pitches and he had nine wings.

“Walking obviously hurts,” Ray said. “It’s something that is extremely frustrating because I think I have things that I don’t need to walk.”

A first-year Mariner, Ray made four starts against Boston last season as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays. He went 2-1 with a 3.13 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 23 innings.

Ray, winner of the American League Sai Young Award, did not travel to Toronto earlier this week because he had not been vaccinated.

On Thursday, Seattle’s Dylan Moore drove four runs while starting at a shortstop. JP Crawford sat with left-handed Rich Hill for Boston.

“We knew we’d probably get some guys on this trip someday (off),” Seattle manager Scott Service said before the game. “I talk to these people a lot about their bodies and how they feel.”

Mariners rookie Julio Rodriguez also left the yard for the 5th-5th night. He has recorded multiple hits in three of his last five games.
