After the start of a full-scale war in Ukraine, streets associated with Russia and Belarus began to be renamed en masse.
Commissioner for the Protection of the State Language Taras Kremin has published a recommended list of Ukrainian figures whose names can be used during renamings.
“I am sure that this agreed list will be useful to everyone, including abroad, who already wants to immortalize in the names of streets, libraries or squares the names of builders – defenders of the Ukrainian language, culture, nation,” said Kremin.
The list of 100 outstanding Ukrainians was formed in cooperation with experts from the National Academy of Sciences.

In particular, it included: Oles Honchar, Ivan Dziuba, Ivan Drach, Dmytro Kremin, Levko Lukyanenko, Yevhen Sverstyuk, Vasyl Symonenko, Vasyl Stus, Vyacheslav Chornovil, Petro Jacyk.

The list did not take into account those figures whose names are already common in geographical names.
According to the language ombudsman, local residents have to choose the appropriate surnames.
“It is clear that the initiative should come from the residents of those settlements in which geographical names and toponymic objects will be renamed.
The task of local authorities is to listen to the community, academic institutions, leading universities, “says Kremin.
