The battle of Borodino can be called the mother of the victories of Russian weapons, military historian Nikita Buranov told Izvestia on Wednesday, September 7. On this day, 110 years ago, the Battle of Borodino took place.
The French cried here: how the Russians defeated Napoleon’s army

The battle lasted 12 hours and was distinguished by the stubbornness of both sides. Despite the fact that the Russian army was forced to leave the battlefield the next day and continue to retreat, this did not lead to its defeat and destruction, which the French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte hoped for, forcing the army to accept a general battle, as he had done before in Europe.
“The Battle of Borodino became the largest battle, despite the fact that there were many battles during the Patriotic War. Yet other battles have not reached such a scope. The battle was the mother of all the victories of Russian weapons. The Russian soldier, Russian officer and Russian commander distinguished themselves by their phenomenal courage, which went down in history – both the deceased Prince Bagration and the famous Rayevsky battery – books and pictures have been written about this, ”the historian emphasized.
Buranov also added that the battle of Borodino is one of the most important milestones in the history of Russian weapons and it is inscribed in history in golden letters.
On June 24, 1812, the French army led by Napoleon invaded Russia. The offensive was so swift that it did not allow the commander-in-chief of the Russian army, Barclay de Tolly, the opportunity to prepare troops for new battles and think over a winning strategy. The Russian Emperor Alexander I replaced the commander-in-chief of the troops with Mikhail Kutuzov.
Although in the first battles under his leadership the Russian army was still forced to retreat, Kutuzov decided to take advantage of the reduced gap in the size of the two armies and give the French a decisive battle near Moscow.
The battle ended with the retreat of the Russian troops, but there was no need to talk about their defeat, the enemy suffered significant losses. According to historians, the French lost about 58 thousand soldiers on the battlefield, while the Russian army lost 38 thousand.
