Rhasidat Adeleke breaks the Irish women’s 400m record in her outdoor debut over the distance in Texas

Teenage sprint star Rhasidat Adeleke put on an amazing run to break the Irish senior women’s 400m record at the Big 12 championships in Lubbock, Texas on Sunday.

Deleke, a sophomore at the University of Texas, is now at just 19 years old the fastest Irish woman of all time in the 60m, 200m, 300m and 400m. The Tallaght sprinter who won the 100m and 200m at the European Championships m gold won U20 championships last summer, had a breakthrough in 2022. She twice broke the Irish 60-meter indoor record and reached the NCAA Indoor Championships final with a time of 7.17 hours.

In January she broke Karen Shinkins’ Irish record of 36.87 seconds in the 300m, which had stood for 21 years, while last month Adeleke broke her own national record in the 200m with 22.59 seconds. She has now achieved qualifying times in the 200m and 400m for the World Championships in Oregon in July and the European Championships in Munich in August. Adeleke will be back in action June 8-11 at the NCAA Championships in Oregon.

Her performance capped a memorable week for Irish athletes as Louise Shanahan broke the Irish women’s 800m record in 1:59.42 in Belfast on Saturday and Eric Favors broke the Irish men’s shot put record – which Paul Quirke had held since 1992 – with broke his throw of 20.07 m in Ponce, Puerto Rico, last Thursday.

On Saturday night in Highgate, Dean Casey of Ennis broke the Irish men’s U20 record in the 10k, his time of 28:57.34, 26 seconds short of Abdel Laadjel’s mark in March. At the same event, Sarah Healy broke her own Irish women’s U-23 mile record in 4:29.03.
