The French Ministry of Culture has officially banned the use of English-language game terms – they will be replaced by French counterparts. In France, jeu video de competition, which means “video game competition”, will soon be used instead of cybersport.
Also, for example, instead of “streamer”, it is suggested to speak un joueur en direct, ie “live player”.
According to the ministry, the decision was made to keep French language-free and to reduce the influence of English on language formation in general. It is also noted that this will eliminate barriers to communication between gamers and non-gamers.
For people who are not interested in games, sometimes some terms may be unclear, and such a decision can be understood.
