Lavrov accused the West of using environmental issues in their own interests

The trend of abuse of environmental issues to promote narrowly selfish, including economic interests, is growing among Western countries. This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Friday, October 7, in a video message to the participants of the international inter-party forum “Environmental Policy and Sustainable Development”.

“There is a growing tendency for developed countries to abuse environmental slogans in order to promote their narrowly selfish opportunistic, including economic interests,” he said.

The minister added that against this background, it is important to promote a unifying environmental agenda on international platforms, based on a reasonable balance between environmental aspects and socio-economic development based on the scientific substantiation of all decisions made.

“Russia is firmly committed to deepening mutually respectful and mutually beneficial cooperation in the interests of strengthening environmental security based on the principles of international law,” he added.

According to Lavrov, the “climatization” and “greening” of the international negotiation process in various sectors hinder the expansion of honest and equal cooperation in this area.

Earlier, on July 15, US presidential special envoy for climate change John Kerry said that Washington was carefully studying the proposals of Russian leader Vladimir Putin on the climate agenda. The current decade, as Kerry emphasized, is critical in the fight against climate change.
